Why Buy The MX5400HST Decision Specs Comparison Guide Why Buy From Ravenscraft Price & Financing Buyer Regrets Land Pride Implements

Why Buy the Kubota MX5400HST?

The MX5400HST hits a sweet spot for buyers who want full MX-Series size, strong LA1065 loader capability, more PTO horsepower, and hydrostatic convenience without stepping into a larger utility tractor.

  • ✔ 54.7 gross horsepower gives you more working power — the MX5400 is a strong choice when your work goes beyond basic loader chores and you expect to regularly run larger or more demanding PTO-driven implements.
  • ✔ Full MX-Series chassis size matters — this is a substantially sized tractor with the weight, stance, and physical presence that make a difference when moving material, grading, mowing rough acreage, or working around livestock.
  • ✔ The LA1065 is a serious loader — this loader gives the MX5400 the capability to handle gravel, dirt, logs, brush, pallets, feed, and properly handled round bales with the right ballast and tractor setup.
  • ✔ 3-range HST is excellent for loader work — easy forward and reverse changes make repetitive loader work, cleanup, grading, and maneuvering around buildings considerably easier than constantly clutching and shifting.
  • ✔ More PTO horsepower is where the MX5400 separates itself — if mowing, rotary cutting, tilling, or other PTO work is an important part of your property maintenance, the MX5400 gives you additional working margin over the MX4900.
  • ✔ Skid steer quick attach opens up the front of the tractor — switch from the bucket to pallet forks, a grapple, bale spear, or other compatible loader attachments as your needs change.
  • ✔ It is a very capable 6-foot implement tractor — the MX5400 is well suited to properly matched rotary cutters, box blades, grading scrapers, tillers, landscape rakes, and other Land Pride implements used for serious acreage maintenance.
  • ✔ It gives you room to grow — buyers often discover new uses for a tractor after they own one. The MX5400 gives you enough chassis, loader, hydraulic, and PTO capability to add useful attachments and implements later without quickly outgrowing the tractor.
  • ✔ You can build it around your property instead of buying a preset package — start with the MX5400HST and LA1065 loader, then choose the cutter, grading equipment, pallet forks, grapple, ballast, or other Land Pride implements that actually match the work you need to do.
The Buyer Takeaway If your work is primarily loader work and normal acreage maintenance, the MX4900 deserves a serious look. But if you know you will regularly use the tractor for heavier PTO work and want additional horsepower without giving up HST convenience, the MX5400HST is where that step up begins to make sense.

Our Tire Recommendation — R4 STL Tires

Many manufacturers are pushing R14T hybrid tires today. While they can offer traction advantages in certain conditions, we generally prefer the heavy-duty R4 STL tire for Kansas acreage use.

With hedge trees, locust thorns, brush, hedge rows, limestone, and rough ground common throughout Kansas, durability and sidewall strength matter.

For loader work, pasture maintenance, driveway grading, livestock operations, and general acreage use, the R4 STL remains our preferred tire choice.
Common Rear Implement Options

GS2584 84" Grading Scraper
Excellent for long gravel driveways, potholes, washboards, and maintaining a smooth crown.

RTR1274 74" Reverse Tine Tiller
A strong fit for gardens, seedbeds, food plots, and worked ground.

RCD1884 84" Dual-Spindle Rotary Cutter
A wider mowing option for larger acreage and buyers who want to cover more ground.
Common Loader Quick Attach Options

PFL3048 3,000 lb Pallet Forks
One of the most useful attachments for moving pallets, lumber, logs, feed, seed, pipe, totes, and building materials.

BS10 Bale Spear
A common choice for round bale handling when paired with proper rear ballast and safe loader setup.

72" SGC1072 Claw Grapple
Excellent for brush, logs, storm cleanup, cedar removal, hedge cleanup, and property cleanup. Requires 3rd function hydraulics.
Why Many Buyers End Up Choosing The MX5400HST

The MX5400HST hits a sweet spot in the Kubota lineup. It gives buyers more PTO horsepower than the MX4900, strong LA1065A loader capability, hydrostatic convenience, and the heavy MX chassis without moving into a substantially larger utility tractor.

For buyers who know PTO work matters but still want HST convenience for loader chores and general property work, this is where the MX5400 makes a very strong case for itself.

Most Common MX5400HST Buyer Regrets We Help People Avoid

Regret #1 — Buying too small because the price looked attractive. Saving money upfront can stop feeling like a bargain when you realize you need more chassis weight, more loader capability, or more PTO horsepower. The MX5400HST is often where buyers land when they want a substantial MX-size tractor without moving into a much larger utility machine.

Regret #2 — Underestimating how much loader work they will actually do. A lot of buyers think they are primarily buying a mowing tractor. Before long they're moving gravel, unloading pallets, carrying lumber, handling feed, cleaning brush, moving logs, or handling round bales. The LA1065A loader may become the most-used part of the tractor.

Regret #3 — Assuming the loader's pivot-pin rating is what they can lift on forks. The LA1065A is rated around 2,275 lbs at the pivot pins, but attachment weight and moving the load farther forward change real-world capacity. For the MX5400HST, we use approximately 1,850 lbs as a practical working target, depending on ballast, attachment, load center, terrain, and setup.

Regret #4 — Getting the horsepower decision wrong. Some buyers pay for horsepower they never use. Others discover the first time they hook onto a larger cutter, heavier tiller, or demanding mowing job that they wish they had stepped up. The MX5400HST sits right between the MX4900 and MX6000 and can be a very good middle ground when PTO work matters.

Regret #5 — Not thinking about rear ballast early enough. A loader this capable needs the tractor set up correctly. Proper ballast improves stability, traction, steering control, and confidence when working with heavy pallets, dirt, gravel, logs, or bales.

Regret #6 — Choosing tires based only on appearance or marketing. For Kansas acreage, we generally prefer the heavier-duty R4 STL industrial tire. Hedge, locust thorns, brush, limestone, loader work, and rough ground make durability and sidewall strength important considerations.

Regret #7 — Not adding a 3rd function before they need a grapple. If brush cleanup, logs, cedar removal, storm debris, or tree work may be in your future, talk about third-function hydraulics when the tractor is being set up. Adding it from the beginning can make future grapple ownership much easier.

Regret #8 — Not getting pallet forks sooner. Pallet forks are often one of the first attachments owners wish they had bought. They turn the loader into a tool for moving lumber, seed, feed, pallets, logs, pipe, fencing material, totes, and countless other things around the property.

Regret #9 — Not thinking far enough ahead. The question isn't only what you need the tractor to do today. Additional acreage, livestock, fencing projects, heavier mowing, round bales, property cleanup, and new attachments have a way of showing up after the tractor is already in the shed.

Regret #10 — Undersizing future implements. The MX5400HST is a substantial tractor and works best with equipment matched to its size and horsepower. Before buying a cutter, tiller, grading scraper, box blade, forks, or grapple, make sure you're choosing an implement that lets the tractor perform the way it was designed to.

Our Advice Tell us what you expect the tractor to do today and what you think you may ask it to do five years from now. The right decision is not just horsepower. It is tractor size, loader capacity, PTO requirements, tires, ballast, hydraulics, and the attachments you may need over the life of the machine.

Why Buy Your MX5400HST From Ravenscraft Implement

  • ✔ Guidance from real experience — 3rd generation owner Dan Ravenscraft grew up assembling implements and working around tractors from a young age, bringing decades of real-world experience to every recommendation.
  • ✔ We help you decide if the MX5400HST is actually worth stepping up to — sometimes the MX4900HST is enough, and sometimes the extra PTO power and capability of the MX5400HST makes more long-term sense depending on your acreage, mowing needs, tilling plans, and future implements.
  • ✔ The MX5400HST is popular because it adds capability without jumping all the way to a utility tractor — more PTO power, strong LA1065A loader performance, hydrostatic control, ROPS simplicity, and heavy MX chassis stability in a size many acreage owners still feel comfortable operating.
  • ✔ We match the tractor and loader to the work you actually do — loader work, mowing, grading, bale handling, brush cleanup, gravel drives, pasture maintenance, fencing, livestock chores, and material handling all require different setup decisions.
  • ✔ Start with the tractor and loader, then build it around your property — the MX5400HST and LA1065A loader give you the foundation, then we help you choose the right rear implements, loader attachments, ballast, and hydraulic options for the work you actually need to do.
  • ✔ Real-world implement guidance matters — pallet forks, grapples, grading scrapers, tillers, bale spears, hydraulic post hole diggers, and rotary cutters all change how useful the tractor becomes, and we help you sort through what is worth buying now versus later.
  • ✔ Skid steer quick attach gives the tractor room to grow — easily switch from bucket to forks, grapple, bale spear, snow attachment, or cleanup tools as your needs change over time.
  • ✔ ROPS tractors are excellent when you are on and off the tractor often — fencing, livestock chores, hooking implements, opening gates, loading materials, and general property work often favor the simple access and visibility of an open-station tractor.
  • ✔ We are honest about tire choices — for Kansas hedge, locust thorns, brush, loader work, and rough acreage use, we generally prefer the more robust R4 STL tire over the thinner-sidewall R14T design.
  • ✔ You’re not alone if this is your first larger tractor purchase — helping customers compare L-series, MX-series, M-series, loader sizes, PTO requirements, tire choices, and implement setups is what we do every day.
  • ✔ Strong parts and service support — large in-stock parts inventory, factory-trained technicians, and open 6 days a week to help keep your equipment working.
  • ✔ Delivery within 100 miles — fully assembled, serviced, tested, and delivered ready to work on your property.
